The Fundamental Problem

چکیده

In the present Part I, we will present some fundamental notions frequently used in economics. The sequence of the ideas to be discussed is not chosen arbitrarily. On the contrary, the discussion of each concept will generate a question leading directly to the following one. At the beginning of our journey through economic thinking we refer to the observation that human beings are endowed (and burdened!) with needs and are permanently attempting to satisfy those needs. A need is a feeling of suffering or dissatisfaction. Hunger, fear, loneliness, rejection and boredom are just a few examples which every reader may already have experienced to some degree. Probably the most prominent attempt to classify human needs stems from the psychologist Abraham Maslow. Maslow elaborated in detail on what he called the “need hierarchy”. At the bottom of this hierarchy he located the so-called basic needs. These he defined as fundamental physiological needs like hunger, thirst, tiredness or pain. At the next level above the basic needs Maslow saw what he called safety needs. Safety needs can be best circumscribed using the terms “fear” and “anxiety”. Human beings may perceive the world as hostile and threatening. They feel endangered by wild animals, criminal assault, murder, social chaos, revolution, tyranny, war, disease, natural catastrophes, breakdown of authority and so on. At the third level Maslow described belongingness and love needs. Love needs are in existence whenever humans suffer from loneliness, ostracism, rejection, friendlessness, and rootlessness. Maslow identifies belongingness needs as feelings of alienation and strangeness. Belongingness needs manifest themselves as a lack of group feelings, contact, intimacy and real togetherness.

The method of fundamental solutions for transient heat conduction in functionally graded materials: some special cases

In this paper, the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS) is extended to solve some special cases of the problem of transient heat conduction in functionally graded materials. First, the problem is transformed to a heat equation with constant coefficients using a suitable new transformation and then the MFS together with the Tikhonov regularization method is used to solve the resulting equation.

Fundamental Solutions of Dynamic Poroelasticity and Generalized Termoelasticity

Fundamental solutions of dynamic poroelasticity and generalized thermoelasticity are derived in the Laplace transform domain. For poroelasticity, these solutions define the solid displacement field and the fluid pressure in fluid-saturated media due to a point force in the solid and an injection of fluid in the pores. In addition, approximate fundamental solutions for short times are derived by...

Ranking and Managing Stock in the Stock Market Using Fundamental and Technical Analyses

The stock selection problem is one of the major issues in the investment industry, which is mainly solved by analyzing financial ratios. However, considering the complexity and imprecise patterns of the stock market, obvious and easy-to-understand investment rules, based on fundamental analysis, are difficult to obtain. Fundamental and technical analyses are two common methods for predicting th...

Fundamental Steady state Solution for the Transversely Isotropic Half Space

Response of a transversely isotropic 3-D half-space subjected to a surface time-harmonic excitation is presented in analytical form. The derivation of the fundamental solutions expressed in terms of displacements is based on the prefect series of displacement potential functions that have been obtained in the companion paper by the authors. First the governing equations are uncoupled in the cyl...

Self-similar solutions‎ ‎of the Riemann problem for two-dimensional systems of conservation‎ ‎laws

In this paper, a new approach is applied to study the self-similar solutions of 2×2 systems of nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. A notion of characteristic directions is introduced and then used to construct local and smooth solutions of the associated Riemann problem
